Interview with Jessica, Joe Smith and Rod
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Jessica: NO I DID NOT.
Joe Smith: Yes but the phone company that they used
required your family on the outside to set up an
account prior to you being able to call collect
to them.
Rod: yes but alot had static or the phone call would
cut off after the 2nd minute
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Jessica: I COULD NOT CALL ANYONE.
Joe Smith: Pretty steep.
Rod: collect
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Jessica: NO, I WAS NOT GIVEN THE OPTION.
Joe Smith: You had the option but you could also call
collect
Rod: I believe u could
JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Jessica: I WAS ALLOWED ONE CALL WHEN I WAS FIRST BOOKED.
I CALLED MY GRANDMA TO COME AND GET MY
CHILD..THEY DID SCREEN THIS CALL.
Joe Smith: They claimed to.

Phone system use is horrible. In this day of cell phones with free long distance, why does the county use a process that at least by appearances is a revenue source for them? My son has tried calling collect. We cannot accept the call. EG: Hit "5" and system does not recognize response. We have tried 5 phones, pulse, tone, etc without success.

The phone company Ramsey county jail has chosen to use is extremely expensive. It is so wrong since the inmates have no other activities to keep their minds occupied. They are basically locked in their cells the majority of the day, no place to exercise, no book cart, lousy food. I think Ramsy county forgets these are people who are valuable and loved by their families.
